The entire civil rights movement was a struggle for equal rights that lasted from the time slavery was abolished to the time when segregation was declared unconstitutional. African Americans peacefully protested excessively during the 50's and 60's, the time near the end of the movements, under organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Many court cases took place to give African Americans equal rights during this time, but even earlier than that, in the late 1800's, there were cases that took away rights. These cases included the Slaughterhouse Cases, Plessy v. Ferguson, and the Civil Rights Cases of 1883. How did these actions effect the African American population in the U.S.?
